NPS Writers Room -- Scenario Development Workshop
The Naval Postgraduate School's (NPS) Naval Warfare Studies Institute (NWSI) and the University of Southern California's Force Writers Room (FWR) present the NPS Writers Room Scenario Development Workshop. Participants in this co-production of NWSI and FWR will be charged with developing a fictional scenario for the 2025 NPS Warfare Innovation Continuum (WIC).
During the workshop, participants will learn tools of narrative fiction used to better convey complex messages, explore topics of key interest to Naval leadership through a new lens, and to envision their research through story. The workshop offers immersive sessions that are designed to ignite creativity and strategic thinking, offering collaborative exercises to brainstorm ideas and refine narrative concepts -- these are insights from professionals who have mastered the fusion of entertainment and military strategy. This is your chance to leave your mark on the future of naval warfare.
Running from July 19-21, 2024, the workshop is limited to government personnel (military and civilian) and is an in-person opportunity only at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California -- no remote participation available. To find out more and to register, visit www.nps.edu/web/nwsi.

    The biggest change I have noted is "cutting of the cord" or not having to plug in anything anymore that is battery powered. Given how tight the confines of offending agressing by Russia still deep inside Ukraine in fact is the effectiveness of such "free range weapons" which may not even require an internal combustion engine anymore hard to overstate that as a huge deal ("long Lance torpedo.") In other words distances of travel for combat operations in Ukraine remain only a few miles. If Ukraine has the ability to counter that by even if only one way 50 miles the effect upon the entire Putin Russia effort would be devastating. Picture a Tesla Cybertruck full load out with a range of 100 miles whilst towing good luck trying to reign that in!

    I posit that you could never truly eradicate the moral exploitation of the American soldier because recruits are contracted unwitting to classified information/intelligence. It will always be exploitation if a recruit is not made aware of what they are truly signing up for. And even with the full facts, at 18yo we hardly entrust young men/women with much of anything, but yet the proverbial we are ok with allowing them to take on the burden of a nation.

      Furthermore, and purely speculative, I’d offer that those that reenlist should not be considered completely off the hook & considered “consciously willing,” as they have been exposed to years of military indoctrination and grooming at a vulnerable/impressionable age.

    Fascinating discussion, though of course you know many of the ideas you have presented are not new - and of course I agree with many of them. One thing you did not discuss is the defensibility of a distributed fleet. Understanding that as long as someone isn't "asleep at the wheel", in a full-scale engagement, the strategy for destroying a naval target is to overwhelm its air defenses. Here, the CVN's support fleet provides an enormous degree of protection. Presumably, the air defenses of a CVL's support fleet will be substantially less, making it a much easier target to strike. While the loss of a CVL would be far less catastrophic than the loss of a CVN, losing several CVLs could result in a severe loss of fleet effectiveness. Another concern is that unless the CVLs are equipped with a nuclear powerplant, range can become an issue. Of course, if they are equipped with a nuclear powerplant, then costs go through the roof and you're right back where you started. You would know this better than I, but I believe that the light carriers in WW2 only became feasible once the US established naval superiority in the Pacific. Using light carriers as a forward expeditionary force may have been suicidal. Nevertheless, this was an excellent forward-thinking discussion. Unfortunately, I don't believe there's an easy answer to this problem, especially when it comes to projecting in the Pacific.

    Good Morning Admiral(Montreal Time Zone), after going through various topics of Maritime relations and having Worlds largest Defense Navy having a Woman Head(A great Positive outlook) here are few doubts given scope of few changes for better Ocean Safety and Security along with Land and Air being at safer side from my end are mentioned below: - India can buy a US Aircraft Carrier and hence can an upgrade with the current fleet of Air Crafts and future buys including F35, Rafale, Sukhoi, Tejas is a great step. This can facilitate the Saudi Arabia to hold a new Air craft Carrier order hence having its docks being ready to fit Kaan Aircrafts too. - USA can further sell 2 of its Aircraft carriers to African Union and South America too, hence the great prospect of USA and its tech along with operation capability training and duties can be in Academy level to operation level works around this Oceans along with its relations and also a very great cost cutting and improvement driven Approach can be accomplished - USA also can build its complete fleet of Air craft carriers to strength of 9 being the other new Air craft carrier of top advancement being fitted to be ready for next level of maritime operations and also a great scope of Marine studies which is at outmost importance can also be accomplished - Additionally, this encourages Russian to build another Aircraft carrier with help of India and its allocations hence with the connect of such improvements safety conditions and exchange of knowledge being in positive direction, China can include another Air craft carrier in relation to the Pacific safety dialogues and also has scope to have 1 order for Africa too. - This further attaches to the needs of Iran moving to improve its own fighter plane with both side of the ocean neighbours having fleets of Aircrafts from USA, Russia, France and China being part of, their inclusion also helps many of the future buy option to be allocated to many countries hence many gult countries can hold all the fleet of fighter Aircrafts where the oil production and refuelling stations amd with own fleet Air pilot officers ready, this further improves the development of safe Air travel and Air academy branches taking up the great advancements in the field of Air transport and also in Air condition studies too. - This can definitely improve the safe conditions and no war stance for more than 50 years as per Defense readiness actions and with help of additional departments at work Veterans employment is having a higher relaxed and most advanced studies adding further positive outlook and readiness in all sectors hence can be stretched for more 12 years - With Raw material holding countries and AAA rating countries like Canada the option of growth improvement is stabilised alsa Canada temperature and winds operating F35 software and running conditions is a great salable option to further enhance the fleet of Air defence to mode of considering forest fires and even tackling them at very highest order is also possible along with additional studies and rules of building such institutions can be great scope of students education chance in institute and also its influence in output can be possible too. This are few I wish to add Admiral, I do have many more but since being a working employees from past 11 years(non employed since a year) I am using type only option so tried best to include this at some explainable views. Thanks

    Combat salvo model is interesting but if land based long range missiles attack ships out of the range of those ships will be sunk. Think of the very long range Kinzhal missiles launched by aircrafts 2,000 km away.

    • @pxatm
      @pxatm 3 місяці тому

      This assumes that long range missiles can be fired in numbers and with simultaneous time on target that can overwhelm the ship's defenses. Long range missiles are often very difficult to effectively target, and almost never out of the range of air power. Technology can be impressive but rarely changes the whole tactical calculus.

    Yes à lot of history. And the book is from 1986..How does a carrier group defense itself against a salvo of hypersonic missiles especially Kinzhals and his combat salvo model he doesn't explain in this book.
